LaVonne grew up
on a farm in the northeast corner of Louisiana, in Madison Parish,
the fifth of seven children. She graduated Tallulah High School
in 1946 Even as a child LaVonne loved reading so much that her
mother would have to call her to come to dinner several times
before she would hear. She also loved to write.
When her HomeEc teacher assigned
a writing lesson asking students to describe what kind of home
each would like to have someday, LaVonne described an antebellum
home. For her efforts she received an F because the teacher
said she could never expect to have such a home.
LaVonne did not get an antebellum
home; she got something better. She married a career soldier
and saw much of the United States and other countries as a military
wife. LaVonne's novels, though fiction, do reflect
her life's experiences. She and her husband, Jim, have three
adult sons, one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
When Jim retired from the military they settled in a modest
home in Columbia, South Carolina where they still reside. They
recently celebrated their fifty-first wedding anniversary.
